About Us
The Southern Garrett Marching Band is under the direction of Mr. Jason Shaw. Any student at Southern High School and Southern Middle School may join the band. The students will work hard to accomplish their goals in the marching band but will gain pride and confidence in themselves to an extent that you cannot imagine while participating in this activity. Being a part of the marching band has opened up doors for prior students to earn music scholarships and perform in collegiate marching band programs. Students may play brass instruments (trumpet, mellophone, baritone, trombone, tuba), woodwinds (saxophones, clarinet, flute, piccolo) and percussion (snare drum, bass drums, tenor drums, marimba, xylophone and other auxiliary instruments). Depending on the show, we may also include keyboard, guitar, bass guitar and other instruments.
Don't forget about the Color Guard! An outstanding visual element to marching bands is the color guard/ auxiliary. Students learn to march and incorporate many elements of dance with the use of flags/ silks, rifles and other visual elements. Our color guard instructor is Mrs. Teresa Weeks who is a SGHS alum and veteran to the marching band scene. No experience necessary!
The Southern Garrett Marching Band has a strong Booster program that raises fund for the program and enables the students to travel to band competitions and festivals both near and a little further away home. The Boosters chaperone the band on all trips and work to provide funding for food and lodging when needed. Being a part of the Booster program allows parents to spend valuable time with their children while they are participating in an activity that serves to improve their independence, reliability and decision-making. In addition to Mr. Shaw, several talented instructors help to teach and enhance the skills of our talented students.
No auditions are necessary, there is a place in the Marching Band for any student with a desire to be a part of this exciting program and the commitment to work hard. We hope that you and your student will make the decision to join the Southern Garrett Marching Band!
